Founded in
1680, being the oldest city in the country, Colonia del Sacramento maintains its colonial
appearance, this being the primal interest for international tourism. Colonia was recently
declared "Cultural Patrimony for Humanity", by the UNESCO. Every history lover
should visit the old cobble stone streets, specially the famous Calle de los Suspiros
(Street of the Sighs), used as scenery for several international films.
Colonia also has a number of complete museums: Museo Portugues, Museo Municipal, and the
Museo del Azulejo, which will take one back in time in search of a still vivid past.
